Maryland health officials are warning residents about a possible rabies exposure after a raccoon tested positive for the virus.
The raccoon was found near the 1900 block of Jerrys Road in Street, the Harford County Health Department announced on Friday, Sept. 18.
The department received confirmation from the Maryland Department of Health that day that the animal had tested positive for rabies.
Officials said the raccoon may have come into contact with people or pets in the surrounding area.
Anyone who believes they or their pets had contact with a raccoon in the area has been asked to call the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300 for follow-up.
Health officials stressed that simply seeing a raccoon is not cause for alarm.
Residents are being advised to keep pets leashed and closely monitored outside, make sure cats, dogs, and ferrets are current on their rabies vaccinations, secure trash cans, and avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
