(TNS) — Students at two Harford County schools will have limited access to their school-issued devices overnight as the school system tests a program to reduce screen time outside school hours.
Youth’s Benefit Elementary families received notice Sept. 3 that their school is the first elementary school in the district to change technology access. From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day this school year, students’ devices will be disabled.
A similar program is being implemented at Aberdeen Middle, where students’ devices will be disabled from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“When students use devices during the school day, it is because there is a specific learning objective that technology helps support,” the Sept. 3 email to families said. “We recognize the importance of balancing digital tools with opportunities for students to unplug, engage face-to-face with their teachers and peers, and participate in meaningful hands-on learning experiences.”
The school system also said in an email to all Harford County elementary school families that their students would no longer be able to access YouTube and web search capabilities, like Google Search.
