Harford County has always been a place where families settle in, neighborhoods feel connected and our schools are a big part of community life. I grew up here, and my sister and I were lucky to have parents who stayed involved in every part of our education. They taught us that a strong academic foundation opens doors long after graduation. That lesson has stayed with me, and it shapes how I think about our school system today.
I believe great schools come from shared accountability — families, educators and the community all pulling in the same direction. The challenges facing Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) aren’t abstract policy debates anymore. They’re daily realities for students who deserve the best possible start. If we want HCPS to thrive, we need practical, student-focused solutions that build confidence, strengthen academics and ensure every child feels safe, supported and prepared for the future.
Our first responsibility is making sure every student has a solid foundation in reading, writing, math, history and science. When students move ahead without mastering these basics, we unintentionally set them up for frustration. HCPS should make a clear commitment: Students advance when they’re ready. It’s not about holding anyone back — it’s about setting them up for long-term success.
